More than 300,000 people gathered in Berlin on Sunday to celebrate 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

How did this happen? After decades of prayer, this event, which took the world by surprise, came after a journalist asked an East German Communist official, Gunter Schabowski, when an announced relaxation on foreign travel restrictions would take place. His inaccurate answer was, “To my knowledge…immediately. Without delay.”

The East Germans, as shocked as the rest of the world, came out to see if the freedom to travel they heard about on the news was true. And among the confusion, the guards, instead of following orders to shoot those seeking freedom, instead stood down.

The lessons? The power of prayer, and the price of freedom.
