Poor little President Obama. He sure did cut a miserable figure after being handed his latest political defeat.
This past week the Supreme Court delivered a massive blow to the Obama administration’s unlawful and unconstitutional effort to grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. In a 4-4 decision that left a previous defeat to amnesty in place, the Supreme Court decided that the President did not have the authority to ignore the law as written and passed by the legislature. In fact, the court simply ruled that Obama was not the king of America, but simply the President, and his job is to enforce existing law — not create new law.
However, Obama couldn’t let the slight pass without whining, while explaining to the media why he’s morally superior to the Justices sitting on the Supreme Court.
Here’s what President Obama had to say:
One of the reasons why America is such a diverse and inclusive nation is because we are a nation of immigrants. Our founders conceived of this country as a refuge for the world, and for more than two centuries, welcoming wave after wave of immigrants has kept us a youthful and dynamic and entrepreneurial nation. It has shaped our character and made us stronger, but for more than two decades now, our immigration system has been broken, everybody acknowledges that it has been broken. And the fact that the Supreme Court wasn’t able to issue a decision today doesn’t just set the system back even further, it takes us further from the country we aspire to be.
I’m not sure why President Obama thinks he gets to be the arbiter of “who we aspire to be,” but in this instance he’s just plain wrong. Throughout our history (and even during Republican administrations) we, the American people, have always been the most generous and caring of humanity. The Court rightly decided that if the President wishes to grant amnesty to millions of illegals, he must first get the legislature to pass laws that will allow him to do so. So the President should stop whining and start working with the legislature. But I doubt the “Great Divider” can put his own ego aside to do so.
