The email shows upper level Defense Department official, Jeremy Bash, offering assistance to those under attack in the hours immediately following the assault. Bash tells his colleagues that the military can be on the ground at Benghazi within a short time.
“…We have identified the forces that could move to Benghazi. They are spinning up as we speak…
Assuming principals agree to deploy these elements, we will ask State to secure the approval from host nation. Please advise how you wish to convey that approval to us.”
This email from Jeremy Bash seems to be a damning indictment of the lies spewed by the Obama team in the immediate aftermath of the attack. Remember, part of the narrative about the situation was that American forces were too far away to lend aid, and Benghazi was therefore left to fend for itself for hours.
Both the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the Secretary of Defense testified in 2013 that our forces could not arrive in Benghazi with enough time to do any good. General Martin Dempsey told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the closest help “wouldn’t have gotten there in time.” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta agreed with Dempsey’s assessment, saying that “time, distance the lack of an adequate warning.” Panetta continued by adding, “I think with regards to those specific individuals that were involved in this attack there was a gap. We didn’t have the intelligence that would have given us a heads-up that this kind of thing was going to happen. And that is something that we do need to pay attention to.”
We know this statement from Panetta was just not true. The nations of Europe had all abandoned Benghazi in previous days, proving that Libya was indeed the most dangerous spot in the world at the time. Further, the Obama administration had received advanced warning to the attack; over a week earlier they had been warned that al Qaeda linked terrorists were planning something in Benghazi.
In the days since the 9/11/2012 attack on the consulate in Benghazi, we have learned that the Obama administration lied to us over and over again. Now, thanks to Judicial Watch, another Obama lie has been uncovered, and we now know that we could have offered a defense of the consulate… but for some reason the Obama team dithered and four American lives were lost. At this point it seems that the Obama team told us more lies than truths when it comes to what really happened in Benghazi.
Will this new information actually matter? I don’t know. The congressional committee investigating Benghazi says that they are aware of this latest blow to the Obama narrative on Benghazi and they will be digging into it soon.
The press secretary for the House Select Committee on Benghazi, Matt Wolking, had this to say to the press about the email:
“The Select Committee has obtained and reviewed tens of thousands of documents in the course of its thorough, fact-centered investigation into the Benghazi terrorist attacks, and this information will be detailed in the final report the Committee hopes to release within the next few months.
While the Committee does not rush to release or comment on every document it uncovers, I can confirm that we obtained the unredacted version of this email last year, in addition to Jake Sullivan’s response. This email chain helped inform the Committee’s interview of Sullivan in September and will help inform the Committee’s upcoming interviews with Thomas Nides and others.”
