New Gun Study The Left Will Ignore

The Bureau of Justice Statics recently release a report showing interesting statistics surrounding the use of guns in crimes.

Among prisoners who possessed a gun during their offense, 90% did not obtain it from a retail source. More than half (56%) of prisoners who possessed a firearm during their offense had either stolen it (6%), found it at the scene of the crime (7%), or obtained it of the street or from the underground market (43%). Fewer than 1% had obtained the firearm at a gun show (0.8%). Second Amendment opponents aren’t going to like this so, naturally, they’re going to ignore it.

Big points:

  • About 1.3% of prisoners obtained a gun from a retail source and used it during their offense.
  • Handguns were the most common type of firearm possessed by state and federal prisoners (18% each); 11% of all prisoners used a handgun.
  • Among prisoners who possessed a gun during their offense, 90% did not obtain it from a retail source.

Of the 287,400 prisoners who possessed a firearm during their crime, a mere 3,736 people got them from a retail source. It’s a bad thing that they purchased a gun for nefarious purpose and I wish it were zero but, clearly, gun stores aren’t the problem.

Rabid, anti-gun leftists go after AR-15 (the “AR” means Armalite Rifle, the original manufacturer of this rifle type) because it looks like the “scary” M4 version the military uses. Those of us who love guns think the AR looks better the more “furniture” you put on it (i.e. accessories) – short of being ostentatious. This study and any weekend in Chicago will tell you that crimes involving handguns are much more prevalent than rifles. This makes sense: Pistols hold many rounds, into the 30s or more with extended magazines, and can be concealed more easily than a standard rifle with a 16” barrel.

Back to where criminals get their guns. Ninety percent (90%) of them did not obtain guns used or possessed in crimes from a retail source so they stole them, found them at crime scenes, or purchased them from an underground or black market.

Moms Demand, Michael Bloomberg, and the rest of the constitutionally illiterate, you say you care about gun crime and want to solve the problem of people – most notably children – getting killed. We of the gun community want that, too. We yearn for it.

Let’s work together to stop black markets where we can. There has to be a way we can come together eliminate this threat. While we’re working on that, let’s conceal carry everywhere possible so if a bad guy (or gal. We’re equal opportunity crime fighters, aren’t we?) wants to do us or our families or friends harm, we can stop them in their tracks.

No, you don’t care about the truth?

I didn’t think so.
