Colorado Springs, CO — Mike Smith, a small business attorney in Colorado Springs, Colorado has launched an independent bid for the White House. As the Republican and Democratic primaries head for the home stretch, Smith is attempting an insurgency candidacy that could shake up the race.
According to his website, www.MikeSmith2016.org, Smith was a White House intern in 2006, serving in the Presidential Personnel Office, where he provided assistance to an office responsible for recruiting executives to serve the President in the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Department of Transportation. He claims that his desire is to ensure that his four sons enjoy the same American freedoms available to his generation and the realization that the remaining presidential candidates are ill-prepared for that task, compelled him to enter the 2016 race as a citizen statesman. While the success of a third party candidacy seems unlikely at this late hour, the idea of a viable third option may be an increasing desire in the minds of voters. A recent Gallup poll found that 60% of Americans say that a third political party is needed because the Republican and Democratic parties “do such a poor job” of representing the American people. Interestingly, a Breitbart article from February 3, 2016 titled The Smith Project: What Voters Want, makes a strong case that an unknown hypothetical “Candidate Smith” could actually win in 2016.
“Millions of Americans are looking for an outsider candidate in 2016 and I am the only true outsider in this race”, claims Smith. Smith continued, “I believe the hero in the American story has always been and will always be ‘We the People’. One thing I am certain of in 2016, the American people will determine who our next President will be — not a backroom convention deal, superdelegates, party bosses, the establishment, the political class, the Democratic Party, or the Republican Party. There is a sure fire way that an independent candidate from the middle class can win the Presidency- the American people stand united against our broken two party system and make their voice heard with their vote in November.”
Will Mr. Smith go to Washington? If there is one thing we can say for sure about the 2016 presidential election, it’s that we should expect the unexpected.
