Liberty University invited Bernie Sanders to speak to its students and promote his Marxist ideology, and if it is open to hosting this politically correct evil advocate, Liberty should be open to hosting a politically incorrect evil advocate next.
The Christian school Jerry Falwell, Sr. founded brought Bernie Sanders to its campus to speak to its students. Apparently someone embracing the ideology responsible for the murders of scores of millions of people—in the twentieth century alone—is someone with whom Liberty believes people should engage. And this belief is no small thing.
Society has no tolerance for racism, no tolerance for so-called sexism, no tolerance for so-called inequality, and no tolerance for the non-existent problem of homophobia. It won’t debate these things or give mainstream venues to people who advocate for them. Society has declared the “debate over” on these topics. Yet it apparently thinks the debate over communism, socialism, and other Marxism hasn’t been settled. Jeff Jacoby wrote a column in 1995 and reminded everyone of just how evil communism is, and in doing so he made a powerful observation.
For pure murderous evil, there has never been a force to compare with communism. The Nazis didn’t come close. The Holocaust was uniquely malignant – never before or since did one people construct a vast industry of death for the sole purpose of rounding up and destroying every single member of another people. But the Nazis exterminated 11 million innocents; the Communist death toll surpasses 100 million. Nazi power lasted from 1933 to 1945. The Communist nightmare began in November 1917, and continues to this day.
Consider that fact. The communists have murdered ten times more than the Nazis ever did (with the counter still going up) and yet the highest levels of society rub elbows with Marxists and even those who are communists or speak approvingly of them. Meanwhile, if there is a hint of someone having any connection to someone who might have once said something approving about someone who once said something that wasn’t entirely condemning of National Socialism, that person is immediately denounced and likely tossed from the public arena.
This is unacceptable. If society is going to open its arms and politely listen to someone advocate for Marxism, then there is no justification for society continuing to have no tolerance for racism, so-called sexism, and so forth. In short, societal embrace of the worst of evils has wiped away any excuse for refusing to entertain all other evils as well.
So will Liberty University next invite a Nazi to speak to its students? What about a white supremacist? Or what about a white nationalist?
If such suggestions seem offensive, don’t get mad at me. Get mad at Liberty University and the rest of society. They’ve established that Marxism still deserves a place in the public forum. And if that evil is publicly acceptable, there is no legitimate reason all other forms of evil shouldn’t be as well.
