Last week, America experienced another senseless mass shooting. This time at a popular country western bar in Thousand Oaks, California where 28-year-old Ian David Long shot and killed 12 people and wounded close to 2 dozen others, some of which were injured trying to escape the carnage.
Long has been described as a former Marine who was suffering from PTSD. Authorities are still not sure what prompted the troubled young man to commit another mass shooting and then to take his own life as SWAT officers closed in on him.
Immediately after the shooting was made public, Democrats and the media again began their rhetorical mantra for more gun control laws. They blame the shooting on guns. In the past, I’ve often asked these socialist driven Democrats to explain how guns are responsible for the actions of people. One woman, a few years ago, responded to my question by saying that when a person has a gun, it automatically makes them become more violent and want to shoot someone. I asked them how a gun does that and if guns have some kind of Jedi mind control over people and she laughed and said that was ridiculous and I responded by saying that her statement was just as ridiculous. I informed her that there are millions of Americans who own guns that never shoot anybody, including myself. Then I asked her about the hundreds of people who have used their guns to protect themselves, their family and others and even stop or prevent mass shootings and she told me that those cases are rare. Once I began listing a number of examples, she got angry and stormed away, indicating that she could no longer justify her socialist anti-gun belief.
If guns are the problem, then why are so many incidents of gun violence in the United States, including the shooting in Thousand Oaks, taking place in areas of the country with the most and strictest gun control laws? Consider that California as a state, has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation as does Maryland, New York and the city of Chicago. Yet, Chicago, Los Angeles and Baltimore are among the leading cities for gun violence.
California has a law against high capacity magazines, but that didn’t stop Long from obtaining and using a high capacity magazine last week. They also have laws to help with mental health issues like PTSD and to prevent people with mental health problems from owning firearms, but that didn’t stop Long, did it?
If guns are the problem, then consider a recent report out of Great Britain, a country with strict gun control laws and where most police don’t even carry a firearm:
“On Wednesday, London police responded to separate stabbings within hours of each other, the victims, a young boy believed to be in his teens and a man, were sent to the hospital with life-threatening or serious stab wounds.”
“That makes two attacks this morning, five this week…and more than 39,000 in just six months.”
“Quietly, a brutal, deadly knife attack epidemic is overwhelming residents and police forces throughout the United Kingdom…”
“During the first six months of the year, police recorded 39,332 knife crime offenses — a 12 percent increase over last year, according to the Office for National Statistics. Other violent crimes, including murder and robbery, also increased by double-digit percentages.”
The problem is not guns but a Godless society that has no hope or moral foundation. What we see happening around the world today reminds me of how mankind was described before God destroyed the earth with His flood:
“Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Genesis 6:5.
It also reminds me of what is written in Romans 3:9b-18:
“None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive. The venom of asps is under their lips. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
This is why there is so much senseless violence in the world today and no amount of legislation will bring about any change. The ONLY solution for the violence in America and the rest of world is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14 which states:
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
