Latest Edict: Federal Restrooms Now Open to Gender of Choice

Anyone who identifies as transgender can use the restroom of their choice in federal buildings.

That’s the latest edict from the Obama administration, which is slowly transforming the concept of government bathrooms to allow anyone to enter any facility.

The latest directive applies to more than 9,000 federal buildings administered by the General Services Administration (GSA) across the country.

The new bulletin, posted to the Federal Register, says “the self-identification of gender identity by any individual is sufficient to establish which restroom or other single-sex facilities should be used.”

It adds that “transgender individuals do not have to be undergoing or have completed any medical procedure.”

Mat Staver, chairman of Liberty Counsel, says the new regulation is “unbelievable” and said it places government employees and visitors to federal buildings at greater risk for sexual assault.

He also maintains that it violates the law.

“The GSA never published this new regulation for public comment before announcing the change,” he said. “This regulation is beyond the authority of the GSA to unilaterally impose on the American people.”

The GSA notes that it is following the lead of other federal agencies, including the Department of Education, the Department of Justice, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.  In recent years those agencies have reinterpreted federal civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination to include gender identity and sexual orientation.

Twenty-four states are currently suing the Obama administration over the new transgender bathroom policy in place across public schools across the country.  A group of parents in suburban Chicago are also suing the government over the same policy.
