The Lindsay Shepherd Case at Wilfrid Laurier University

By B. Klein

Totalitarianism always functions, at least to those who live through it, as sets of contradictions and impossibilities—nothing makes sense and is punitive, like the line: “The Minster of Justice will see you now. Please go in. He’s not there.”

In some ways it is not unlike being in a relationship with a person that has narcissistic personality disorder and who gas-lights you. Most therapists advise, get out fast and get far away because such people will destroy you and then pretend they were the ones harmed.

The case of communications graduate student Lindsay Shepherd at Wilfrid Laurier University is a stunning and disturbing example. You can hear the whole bullying session that she secretly recorded. At the heart of the issue is the Jordan Peterson clip that Shepherd showed to her Communications class. In the clip aired on Canadian public T.V. Peterson discusses C16 and compelled speech laws in Canada. He explains the inherent problems and danger to a free society that comes from demanding people use an invented language and inaccurate 3rd person pronouns.

According to the professors, Nathan Rambukkana and Herbert Pimlott, and Adria Joel the “Gendered Violence Prevention and Support” manager, Shepherd’s committed a violation of Canada’s C16 speech laws and an act of violence against an entire marginalized oppressed group, and transphobia, when she showed her class a short clip of a debate that was televised showing University of Toronto psychology professor Jordan Peterson (who they compared to Hitler and said was alt-right) who explains the denial of basic freedom that comes with compelled speech laws. Shepherd was told by Nathan Rambukkana, that Peterson’s views should not have been brought up without first denouncing his position.

That totalitarians and narcissists go after language makes sense. Words and language change over the course of time. When language is forced to change that is a signal a culture has slipped into a totalitarian ethos. As Thomas Szasz noted the ones that control the language have the power. That is very important.

We have certain situations when we accepted compelled speech. The warnings on cigarets’ are compelled speech employed for the public good. Another condition for compelled speech is that it must be true. The problem with the pronouns, is both that they deny other peoples right to free speech, and that they harm people by forcing them publicly to say lies out-loud over and over.

It is important to recognize that postmodern gender and sexual identity ideology morphed the old fashion familiar Marxism into something even the most upper crust can claim oppression. All it takes is replacing notion of inequality, of class, and capital with the idea of sexual and gender identity. Think: the oppressor and the oppressed, but in this new rendition we have a lot of swanky role playing false victims and faked oppression housed on safe campuses and in corner offices.

This type of swap is both Orwellian and freighted with traits from the long list of cluster B personality disorders. For the narcissist personality type, truth has no meaning, material reality also up for grabs, and other people are not seen as human. They thrive by throwing others into chaos in order to exert control.

Nathan Rambukkana, who called the meeting is a professor of communications and an identitarian and also Shepherds supervisor.

Rambukkana tells Shepard that, ” . . . but the reality is that it has created a toxic climate for some of the students…
…One or multiple students who have come forward, saying that this is something that they were concerned about, and that it made them uncomfortable. You are perfectly welcome to your own opinions, but when you’re bringing it into the context of the classroom, that can become problematic, and that can become something that is – that creates an unsafe learning environment for students.” He is lying. There was no complaint.

He has since written an anemic apology to Shepherd. From the pleasure he seemed to take in reducing Shepard to tears I would suggest his interest extends beyond the academic.

Her voice breaks and they reduce her to tears.

Shepherd: Sorry, what did I violate in that policy?

Joel: So, gender-based violence, transphobia in that policy. Causing harm to trans students by bringing their identity as invalid, or their pronouns as invalid – potentially invalid.

Shepherd: So I caused harm and violence?

Joel: Which is under the Ontario Human Rights Code a protected thing, and also something that Laurier holds as a value.

In the recording Shepard made, Herbert Pimlott is the one heard to mis-represents the peer review processes and the criteria for “reliability”in research. He claims that Peterson is a “charlatan” a member of the “alt-right” and like Hitler. For the record, Professor Jordan Peterson of the University of Toronto has far more citations and publications under his belt than Pimlott. Pimlott is Vice President of the Wilfrid Laurier faculty association. Through the position, he may have the ear of some of the administration. Pimlott’s claim that Peterson is not credible just amplifies his own forethought and malice.

To say that there are several layers of duplicity, some more apparent than others, is an understatement. My easiest conclusion is that, there needs to be a word in English that means—pompous, kinkster.

Simply put, when identity is linked foremost to sexual preoccupations and that includes sexual exhibitionism, violence, sadism, and fetishes it becomes clear that there is a public violation of other peoples rights seen in the demand other people affirm their feelings in the public. Are we all expected to role play, cosplay, what? Many do not give their consent. Now what?

I wonder if in fact identity politics as a movement and ideology either attracts, creates, or covers for a certain types of personality disorders and given certain “tells” is not linked psychological to kink issues that we are not supposed to mention? The Universities’ cover up feels even worse—trivial, spiteful, and lurid. Is there now a special set of rights and protections for leftists with sexual fetishes?

That’s how are we trending. Another recent case shows just how “regular” people are treated in higher education: “Vancouver Island University is at the centre of a human rights complaint alleging that female staff were not protected from a student who brought a diaper-related sexual fetish to the B. C. school.A 105-page complaint filed by the Nanaimo school’s former director, Human Rights and Respectful Workplace, Katrin Roth, said the man’s behavior was treated as a disability when it should have been dealt with as a potential threat to female staff.”He will not stop unless we make him,” said Roth.”

That begs the question: what if there is a whole movement of people who are in fact narcissistic abusers (fronting as SJW) who have found a near perfect cover in gender and sexual identity politics that allows and encourages them to act out their abuses on others in the public square?

Ms Shepherd was a set up from the start. There actually was not a student complaint made. It seems “The Rainbow Center” may have made a fabricated complaint as a tool to silence. Hearing thoughts you do not agree with is not dangerous—it should happen in a University.

David Haskell states: “Existing research suggests that, for the average person, no lasting harmful effects arise from exposure to ideas they might find offensive. Amongst clinical psychologists, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is currently considered the gold standard treatment for anxiety disorders, including PTSD. A core component of CBT is exposing a person to their fears as well as reducing behaviors which encourage avoidance. The underlying logic of this technique is that avoidance increases mental fragility while exposure decreases it.
