Hamas Breaks Ceasefire; Israel Responds

That’s the headline of a report in the Jerusalem Post dated August 19th, and yes, that feeling of déjà vu is justified. Here is just part of the report:

Three rockets fired from the Gaza Strip landed in open areas near Beersheba on Tuesday, violating a temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and prompting an IDF response.

The attacks came despite a temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hamas that was extended on Monday night and was not scheduled to expire until midnight.

If you think you’re having a strong sense that you’ve experienced this news report before, you might have a tiny clue as to what some Israelis experience — and have experienced — for many years. So many rockets are fired into Israel that sometimes the Israeli press doesn’t cover it as news unless someone is killed.

Last month a video of a young woman discussing life on the Gaza border received some attention, and if you have ten minutes, you should watch it. The problem she discusses is not new, and in fact, a video from 2008 from this same (even younger) lady can be found on YouTube talking about the very same problem.

BarbWire has covered the news of Hamas’ terrorism and Israel’s ground offensive into Gaza, but these days there’s always a new scandal or controversy or foreign policy mess so the “old news” seems to readily get pushed off of the front page.

Again, here’s the Jersualem Post:

Diplomatic sources said that in light of the rockets fired on the South and the violation of the cease-fire, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon instructed the [Israeli Defense Forces] to resume its attacks on terror targets inside the Gaza Strip.

In light of the long-running terror, many who support Israel pray for the peace of Jerusalem understand that is exactly the right course of action.
