God’s blessings are only found within God’s boundaries.
Can you imagine watching an NFL football game that didn’t have any boundaries? It would be like watching a bunch of dudes play “tackle the man with the ball,” which is a pointless game that has no clear objective other than tackling anyone who picks up the ball. Quite often, the game ends in name-calling, temper tantrums and everyone quitting. (Jason: I could share a thing or two about my brother here, but I’ll refrain.)
We played plenty of “tackle the man” when we were boys, but what was most fun for us was playing a real game of football with end zones, penalties and sidelines. Once the boundaries were in place, we could play with order and strategy – and we knew who won or lost.
Watching culture in America right now is like watching one big game of “tackle the man with the ball.” And we’re seeing the same childish reactions by the players that we saw as kids. Name-calling and temper tantrums are commonplace, which is why many people have simply given up and walked off the field.
What we need are boundaries.
As Abraham Lincoln once said, “Those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.” He – as well as many leaders before him – understood that God’s blessings come within God’s boundaries.
At the end of this month, we’ll be tuning in as the Supreme Court hears oral arguments over four same-sex marriage cases from across the country. These cases show the irony of wanting God’s blessings while simultaneously adamantly rejecting His boundaries.
God made marriage, and God made sex – they go hand in hand. Within His boundary of covenant marriage between a man and a woman, sex is an incredible blessing to a family and to a nation. It brings life – figuratively in the relationship and literally with children.
Yet remove God’s boundary, and all hell breaks loose. It’s like lighting a fire outside of the fireplace in your house. Within the proper boundary of a fireplace, fire keeps you warm, heats your food and is romantic to enjoy. But once it gets outside the fireplace, it destroys everything in sight!
The same is true with sex. The blessing of sex is only found within its God-given boundary of marriage.
In fact, the Bible contains all the boundaries for life – not just for marriage and sex – that will secure the blessings we all seek to enjoy as families and as a nation.
We know such an exclusive statement is controversial, but facts are facts. And we’re not the first guys to make such a statement.
Noah Webster, the father of American education and author of the first American dictionary, once said, “God’s word, contained in the Bible, has furnished all necessary rules to direct our conduct.”
President Lincoln also said, “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book. But for it we could not know right from wrong.”
These guys weren’t idiots. They understood that the Bible provides the governing rules for society to flourish. And America flourished!
America flourished so much that in 1831, French political thinker and historian, Alexis de Tocqueville, traveled here to discover why our nation was so unique. He wrote:
“I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors … in her fertile fields and boundless forests; in her rich mines and vast world commerce; in her public school system and institutions of learning. I sought for it in her democratic Congress and in her matchless Constitution. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good. When America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
The moral boundary lines contained within the Bible, such as honesty, integrity, private property rights, hard work, chastity and character were the markers for God’s blessings on our nation. And other nations took note.
Yet today things have changed drastically. The boundary lines have been removed, and the blessings of liberty will ultimately be lost as a result. We are watching this unfold before our very eyes with religious freedom lawsuits popping up all around the country.
So if we want God’s blessing on our nation, we must be willing to live within His boundaries. And we mustn’t wait on our leaders to direct our conscience. We can choose to live this way today. “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).
In your own life, your home, your business and your community, you can experience God’s blessing as you humbly commit to living within His boundaries. Just look in the same place where many of our forefathers and Founding Fathers looked – and you’ll find the answer.
