With everything going on the in Middle East, Hamas and ISIS on the attack, I’ve had several conversations with my kids about the harsh reality of what is actually taking place in the world. Explaining the Middle East to our kids is quite difficult, as their eyes are as big as saucers listening to me describe the situation over there, which could quite possibly come here if we’re not careful.
So here’s what I’m teaching them:
Both ISIS and Hamas are nothing more than two different gloves covering the same fists – the fists of Satan. Hamas leads with the jab while ISIS preps for the haymaker.
Satan comes to “rob, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). Hamas‘s motto reflects this: “Jihad is our way and death is our wish.” Satan is also “enraged with the woman, and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring – those who keep God’s commandments and hold fast to the testimony of Jesus” (Revelation 12:17).
ISIS‘s ultimatum to Christians in Mosul reflects this: “Convert to Islam, pay a fine or face ‘death by the sword.’”
But Satan doesn’t just want death, he wants dominion.
Hamas wants dominion over Israel. ISIS wants dominion over the world – to re-establish a Caliphate (rule in the place of Muhammad) Islamic government, which is why they force conversion to Islam or face death. To these groups, Islam is not just a religion, it is a dominant political ideology.
Quick note on dominion: God gave Adam dominion over the earth, but Adam gave it to Satan through his silence. Christ got dominion back at the cross, and He gave it to His body in the earth – the church. Just as Adam’s silence gave Satan dominion then, the church’s silence will give it back to him today.
So Satan has entered the ring once again – wearing the gloves of ISIS and Hamas. He’s making his way through the ranks (Shiites, Kurds, parts of Iraq & Syria, Israel) en route to the champ (USA). But the USA has gotten soft.
The only entity strong enough to stand in the ring and face this evil is the bride of Jesus Christ, the church. Historically the church in America has been strong, but not anymore. The nation is soft because the church is soft. We can not forget that “the gates of hell will not prevail against the church” (Matt 16:18b).
Unfortunately for America, the church has focused more on herself (the artificial social construct, not the real body) than on advancing God’s Kingdom in the earth – signified, in part, by resistance to evil so that good may flourish. She’s lost her saltiness and thereby, lost her authority. There’s no place in the conversation among national leaders for Christians to come in and help fight the satanic powers alive in Hamas and ISIS today.
As Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority.”
It’s time for Christian leaders to join hands and call for solemn assemblies of repentance for our own apathy and sin – for the sake of our nation and the world. It’s time to preach relevant sermons that help equip us for the battles that lie ahead. It’s time for our pastors to teach what it practically looks like to be salt and light in the world today. It’s time to ask our national leaders to join us in repentance, that we may – as a nation – return to the only Power strong enough to defeat this beast that is robbing, killing, and destroying the lives of so many.
I’m teaching my kids it’s time for Christians to step back in the ring. Truth and Love are our gloves – will we put them on?
