Duty Is Ours, Results Are God’s

John Quincy Adams, our 6th president, was an amazing man. He’s the only man to ever leave office as President of the United States and then run for Congress. Why?  Because he felt compelled to end slavery.

While in Congress he lost many political battles, but when asked why he refused to give up, he simply said, “Duty is mine, results are God’s.”

This statement summarizes what we all should believe concerning the task God has given us to do. We can’t focus on results, we must simply focus on doing our duty.

The Apostle Paul stated in Acts 20:22, “And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.”  I think many of us can say the same thing as Paul said in our own way:

“And now I am on my way to building this business, not knowing how it’s going to turn out.”

“And now I am going to have another baby, not knowing how I’m going to feed him/her.”

“And now I am going to tell the truth, not knowing if it’s going to cost my job.”

“And now I am going to expose the lie, not knowing what’s going to happen to my reputation.”

“And now I am going to stand and fight, not knowing if I will win or lose.”

If we focus on results then we’ll usually not do what God wants us to do. But, if we focus on our duty, then we’ll be free to let Him work!

We’ve seen this in our own lives as we knew that we needed to stand where God stands on hot-button moral issues. As we stood for truth God has handled all the rest. Of course, it hasn’t turned out exactly as we had planned, but we know that God is in control of the results, and simply doing our duty is such a freeing experience!
