“The great question is whether it actually wants to defend reason and modernity anymore, or whether Western civilization has now reached a point where it has stopped trying to survive.” Melanie Phillips “The World Turned Upside Down: The global battle over God, Truth and Power” Pg. 408
It is doubtful anyone can rightly comprehend the modern world without reading this book. Rarely does an author “put it all together” with such clarity and substantiation. Phillips points out we are experiencing “ . . . a kind of mass derangement, as truth and lies, right and wrong, victim and aggressor are all turned upside down.”
Phillips’ essential thesis: we have turned our backs on the God of love — found in the Judeo-Christian traditions — and have thereby unleashed the combined forces of secularism, human pride and false religion upon the world, and especially upon the West, inviting mayhem.
“We tell ourselves that religion and reason are incompatible, but in fact the opposite is the case. It was Christianity and the Hebrew Bible that gave us our concepts of reason, progress and an orderly world—the foundation of science and modernity.”
Phillips is entirely correct. And if we look at history, it is obvious the greatest forces behind anarchy, genocide and war include atheistic dictators and Islamic jihadists, both supremacists, both ruthless, both thoroughly anti-West, anti-liberty, anti-Jew, and anti-Christian. Political correctness blinds us to the realities of Jihad, Sharia and global war.
If we believe the numbers from the polling and the research, in the minds of 40-80% of Muslims, they are at war with the West. Ten percent of the 1.7 billion Muslims in the world report they embrace violent Jihad. That’s 170 million people willing to kill and die for their expanding theocracy. Their goal: global Sharia, by force if necessary, through stealth and infiltration if possible. Daily, we see evidence of their success through infiltration and terrorism in Europe. The entire 10/40 Window is on fire. Stealth, infiltration, immigration, demoralization and outright terrorism characterize the invasion in the Western Hemisphere. Therefore we are forced to focus on the global war declared by Jihad against not only the West, but upon the entire non-Muslim world. It is a war we must win, or we face horrific outcomes: nuclear annihilation, or endless war, mass enslavement, starvation and pandemics. Winning will depend in part on forming alliances with the 90% of Muslims who want no part of violent Jihad.
To win, the West, especially America, is required to muster the clarity of mind and the will to fight back effectively. This is not only a war being fought on a 1,000 battlefields, it is a war for hearts and minds throughout the world. Unless we name the enemy, define the enemy, understand the enemy and outsmart the enemy, backed by majority support of the general population, we will never win the information war. We cannot kill 170 million religious fanatics armed to the teeth. It is even doubtful now that we can prevent nuclear skirmishes in the Middle East, thanks to Obama’s Iran Deal.
However, we can summon the intelligence, the courage and the will to fight both militarily, as a deterrent, and intellectually, for unless we win the propaganda war, we face endless military conflict. And for any of this to happen, we need brilliant, objective, courageous leadership in the tradition of Reagan, Churchill, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Truman, MacArthur, Patton, Bradley, Netanyahu and Golda Meir. The current slate of nominees in the U.S. does not inspire, or even reassure.
In real terms, this crisis exceeds what the Allies faced in 1941. At the same time, the West is substantially weakened and far less capable than the spirited souls of The Greatest Generation. We shall see if we have what it takes, not just to survive, but to prevail. It may very well take a miracle, a specialty of the God we used to know. The American and Israeli armed forces are certainly capable and willing, but are civilian majorities willing to fully engage? That is a huge question mark, for at least half the people appear hostile to the God that might otherwise save them.
“While the Islamists are intent on returning the world to the seventh century, the West no longer seems willing or able to defend the modernity and rationalism that it brought into being.” Melanie Phillips
