I’ve heard many Christians complain that the LGBTQ community has hi-jacked the biblical rainbow. I’ve even heard some Christians complain that the LGBTQ use of the rainbow symbol defiles the sign of a covenant God made with the earth Genesis 9:8-17, which states:
“Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, ‘Now behold, I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and with your descendants after you; and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.’ God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations; I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ And God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth’.”
To begin with, some Christians believe that rainbows never existed before the Flood, but is simply not true nor is it supported by Scripture. On Genesis 2:6, it states:
“But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.”
The physics of light waves would indicate that rainbows would have been seen with these mists. Besides, when God made the covenant with the earth, His use of the ‘bow’ indicates something that man was familiar with.
Did you know a natural rainbow consists of SEVEN colors? They are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
The LGBTQ flag, created by Gilbert Baker of San Francisco back in 1978, consists only of 6 colors – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. The flag does not contain indigo and therefore is NOT the same as the rainbow God referred to in Genesis 9. Some LGBT activists will use all seven colors, but the official rainbow of the LGBTQ movement is only 6 colors.
Some believe there is a reason why Baker excluded indigo from his flag. Indigo is the color of royalty, and of spiritual knowledge and wisdom, which often connects heaven and earth. Eliminating indigo from the LGBTQ flag is seen by some as purposely NOT wanting to be connected to God.
A seven-color rainbow is said to represent completion and perfection, while the 6-color rainbow represents imitation and falling short of perfection and thus Satan. You could put it this way, God creates but Satan only imitates and this is one reason Satan is also called the Great Deceiver.
