What is the right age of accountability?
When I was younger, the general age of accountability was 21. A person had to 21 in order vote and drink alcohol. There was also a number of professions that had a minimum age of 21 for licensing purposes.
A person could get married between the ages of 18-20 with parental consent, at least in the state I grew up in.
A person could enlist in the military at 18, where they were trained to use a firearm and other weapons to use in service to our country.
Back then, there was a movement to lower the voting and drinking age to 18. The argument used was that if someone could risk their life in the military, then they were old enough to drink and vote. Consequently, the legal age for voting and drinking was lowered from 21 to 19 in the same year I turned 21. In time, the ages for both drinking and voting were raised back up to 21, where they still are today for most of America.
Once again, the issue of age of accountability has been raised by some Democrats, such as Beto O’Rourke, a former US Representative from Texas and former El Paso City Council member. O’Rourke nearly unseated Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2018 election, thanks to the help of being heavily funded by socialist George Soros and out-of-state donations.
O’Rourke is one of the louder voices for a movement to again lower the voting age to 18. I need to note that he also proposes allowing non-citizens (including illegal aliens) to vote. Like many liberal leftists, O’Rourke has used the argument of 18-year-olds being able to serve in the military as justification for allowing them to vote.
However, the real reason is that today’s public-school system is pumping out indoctrinated socialists who will vote Democratic, so Democrats want those votes as soon as possible. He also believes that most illegal aliens (there are somewhere between 15 million and 20 million currently in the US) will also vote Democrat.
It should be noted that no Democrat that I have heard of has offered to lower the drinking age to 18, just the voting age.
The hypocrisy of O’Rourke’s justification for lowering the voting age is seen by the fact that most Democrats are pushing to raise the federal legal age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21.
Think about it. In the minds of Democrats, 18-year-olds are mature enough to join the military and fight for their country and mature enough to vote, but not mature enough to purchase a firearm with which to protect themselves, their loved ones and their homes. They are old enough to use a firearm and die while protecting their country, but not to protect themselves here at home.
The bottom line is, for Democrats, the age of accountability has NOTHING to do with maturity or accountability and everything to do with their anti-American socialist agenda.
