Democrats Adopting Forrest Gump Mentality

When I was attending graduate school in the summer of 1994, a fellow student convinced me to go see this new movie that everyone was raging about it. The movie was Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks.

I admit the movie was well done, but could have done without the vulgar language. There have been a number quotes from that movie, like the one about life being like a box of chocolates, but there is one specific quote from the movie that I believe displays the mentality of Democratic Party. The quote is:

“Stupid is as stupid does.”

There are many things the Democrats are doing that fit that quote. National socialized healthcare is failing everywhere it has been tried – Great Britain, Canada and Venezuela, but Democrats are pushing for the same thing here in the US and they call it Free Medicare for All, only the free part comes with a priced of $3 trillion a year.

Some of the same Democrats are also pushing for free college tuition for everyone. I haven’t yet see a price tag for the free tuition, but it has been estimated to be near the same price as free healthcare for all. Considering the total federal budget is around $4 trillion a year, guess how Democrats plan on raising around $6 trillion more a year to pay for the FREE healthcare and tuition? Your paychecks, that’s how.

Democrats are also pushing a measure to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour. Everyone would love to make more money, but so far, everywhere it’s been tried here in the US so far has proven that it’s a VERY bad idea.

The current minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.

What do you think happens when employers are forced to pay their people over double what they were paying?

Seattle is run by Democrats and in 2015, they raised the minimum wage in the city to $15 per hour and guess what happened?

USA Today reported:

“As companies look for ways to cut costs, Seattle’s $15 minimum wage law may be hurting hourly workers instead of helping them, according to a new report.”

A report from the University of Washington (UW), found that when wages increased to $13 in 2016, some companies may have responded by cutting low-wage workers’ hours. The study, which was funded in part by the city of Seattle, found that workers clocked 9% fewer hours on average, and earned $125 less each month after the most recent increase.”

New York City is another city run by liberals wearing blinders who raised the minimum wage up to $15 per hour. Reports coming out of New York City say that Applebee’s restaurants have cut their work force by over 1,000 employees. The reports also state that at least 1,000 restaurants have either closed their doors or moved out of the city due to the increase of the minimum wage. Figuring that between cooks, waiters, waitresses, busboys, cleaning staff, management and other employees, each restaurant employed anywhere from 10 to 50 workers, losing 1,000 restaurants means that the city lost somewhere between 10,000 to as many as 50,000 jobs, not counting the 1,000+ jobs that Applebee’s cut.

Zane Tankel, CEO of Applebee’s New York franchises directly blames New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (Democrat) and Mayor Bill de Blasio (Democrat). He says their far left-leaning policies are ruining the dining experience that the city is famous for. Instead of having 1 server for every 3 to 4 tables during peak hours, his restaurants are being forced to have 1 server take care of 10 tables. He says that the restaurants are being forced to cut up to two-thirds of their staff in order to afford to pay the higher minimum wage.

Commenting about the effects of the minimum wage, Tankel state:

“The model now that we’re heading towards – where we had one server for three or four tables – we’re moving towards one server for 10 tables … eliminating about two-thirds of our labor ultimately, but it’s because of Cuomo, De Blasio – the liberal agenda.”

“[I]f you don’t have a job, $100 an hour doesn’t help you a whole lot, does it?”

So, what would be the estimated impact of raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour?

The National Sentinel reports:

“Rather than allow the free market to work its magic, Democrats will seek to defy well-established economic principles by imposing an artificially high wage on businesses that cannot afford them.”

“As such, the net result will be a massive loss of entry-level jobs — 2 million or so — that provide opportunities and life experience for Americans coming into the workforce.”

“As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, workers, academics, and business owners are panning congressional Democrats’ push to raise the national minimum wage to $15 an hour…”

“David Macpherson, chair of Trinity University’s Department of Economics, said that kind of increase would devastate employment, the Free Beacon noted.”

“He said that currently, just 3 percent of U.S. workers are employed under the minimum wage. But raising it to $15 an hour would increase that to 44 percent of the U.S. workforce, decimating profit margins for small-to-medium businesses who would then have to eliminate workers to stay afloat.”

“That means that poverty would increase, not decrease — just the opposite of what Sanders and socialist Democrats claim.”

“Using Congressional Budget Office methodology, MacPherson said about 2 million jobs would be lost under a $15 rate, with the heaviest losses coming in the poorest states.”

You don’t have to be an economic expert or genius to see that raising the federal minimum wage will cause another major recession. Besides, with at least 2 million more people out of work and many others working fewer hours and bringing home less pay, how in the world to they expect to raise about $6 trillion a year to pay for their FREE healthcare and college tuition?

Yes, I do believe that Forrest Gump best describes today’s Democrats when he said:

“Stupid is as stupid does!”
