On the same day that federal and state legislators heard from over fifty thousand Americans from across the nation – all calling for an investigation into the outrageous abuses of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the release of Justina Pelletier to her family – a Connecticut state senator began his campaign in Justina’s home state.
In a press conference held Wednesday, Connecticut Senator Joe Markley announced that he had written a letter to Joette Katz, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF), “to turn custody of this young girl back to her parents in West Hartford.”
Justina Pelletier remains a “ward of the state,” virtually imprisoned by the Massachusetts DCF. The Massachusetts DCF said they are willing to work with the Connecticut DCF in transferring Justina Pelletier’s case to them, but as of this writing, Justina remains in a Boston-area facility.
In the letter being circulated to his senatorial peers, Markley wrote:

“[W]e see no reason for the Connecticut Department of Children and Families to involve itself in a case which has been so thoroughly examined to so little effect… This distressing story should end with Justina at home in the care of her parents, and we hope you will not delay that resolution.”
Liberty Counsel wholeheartedly agrees and our legal team is working to have this gross abuse of the rights of Justina Pelletier and the Pelletier family stopped immediately.
We are also calling for the Massachusetts state legislature to intervene and begin a thorough investigation of the abuses visited upon the Pelletier family (and others) by the DCF.
Yesterday, Liberty Counsel delivered the first round of our End the Pelletier Nightmare petitions to the Governors of Massachusetts and Connecticut, Congressman John Larson from Justina’s home district in West Hartford, CT, Congressman Michael Capuano who represents the Boston area, and the two Massachusetts State Legislators who are proposing investigative action against the DCF.
The Massachusetts representatives are introducing a resolution entitled “Acknowledging Serious Concerns regarding DCF’s handling of the Justina Pelletier Case” in the state’s House.
Joining Senator Markley at the press conference yesterday was Justina’s father, who summarized his family’s ordeal in a few, emotion-packed words: “Our family has gone through 13 months of any family’s worst nightmare,” he said.
Lou Pelletier is also scheduled to appear before the Massachusetts Senate. We are praying that the collective body of Massachusetts’ legislators will take appropriate action against the DCF and end the assault on the Pelletier family.
While this battle unfolds in the legislatures and courts, Liberty Counsel will remain engaged as much as possible to see that Justina is returned to her home and family.
