OneNewsNow.com — The FBI removed a link to the Southern Poverty Law Center from its website but the left-leaning organization claims it’s still working with the Feds.
Southern Poverty was listed under the “Resources” banner on the FBI’s “Hate Crimes” web page, but a March 26 story in The Washington Examiner reported the FBI had quietly dropped the SPLC from the list. (See old list below).
In a Christian Post story published March 30, SPLC officials claimed they still serve the FBI and train law enforcement nationwide.
In the Post story, a spokesperson for SPLC pointed out that the organization is listed under a “Public Outreach” section, which also lists far-left organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign and the National Organization for Women.
Matt Barber, vice president of Liberty Counsel Action, points out that SPLC has “proven ties” to an act of domestic terrorism, since a homosexual activist used the “Hate Map” in a failed plan to murder Family Research Council employees in 2012.
Floyd Corkins wounded a guard inside FRC’s Washington, D.C. office, and he admitted to FBI agents that he planned his attack after reviewing the “Hate Map” on the Southern Poverty website for “anti-gay groups.”
The removal of the SPLC as a resource was applauded by the Family Research Council and the American Family Association, since SPLC has designated both organizations as “hate groups” due to their traditional stance on marriage.
FRC and American Family Association were also part of 15 conservative groups that sent a letter in February to the Department of Justice, asking the agency to remove SPLC from its “Resources” banner, citing Corkins’ attack as a main reason.
An FBI spokesman told The Christian Post that SPLC was removed because it is not a federal agency.
In an interview with CNSNews, Southern Povery leader Morris Dees famously denied any responsibility for Corkins’ use of the “Hate Map” and claimed “hate groups” are responsible for urging others to attack homosexuals.
“They cause people to attack gay people,” he claimed, even though Corkins had cited SPLC as his source.
OneNewsNow has reported on SPLC and its “Hate Map” for some time, most recently reporting on questions about how the FBI considers the organization a trustworthy source.
Citing Corkins’ own admission, Barber said Christians should call on the Obama administration to “further distance itself from this left-wing extremist group,” referring to SPLC.
“It just continues to undermine the credibility of the good men and women that work at the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Barber tells OneNewsNow.
He goes on to suggest that the Department of Justice and the FBI should “publicly repudiate the propaganda and extremism perpetrated by the Southern Poverty Law Center.”
