Speaking at the Southern Baptist Convention’s 2014 Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission Leadership Summit on April 22, ERLC President Dr. Russell Moore delivered a lecture entitled: “Walking the Line: The Gospel and Moral Purity.” During the address, he remarked, in part: “I listened on the way back up here from my hometown to some Christian talk radio this week — against my doctor’s orders. If all that I knew of Christianity was what I heard on Christian talk radio, I’d hate it, too. There are some people who believe that fidelity to the gospel simply means speaking, ‘You kids get off my lawn.’ That is not the message that has been given to us.” Moore’s remarks were in the context of defining the appropriate Christian response to the homosexual sin movement and the push for Christian recognition of sodomy-based “marriage.”
On April 24, Christian talk radio host Janet Mefferd responded to Moore’s remarks on her nationally syndicated Salem Radio Network program, “The Janet Mefferd Show.” Janet defended the Biblical fidelity of Christian talk radio, especially on the issue of so-called “same-sex marriage”:
