On Lacking Good Hearts and The Tyranny of Thoughtlessness
Thoughtfulness is rare: true objective inquiry, virtually nonexistent. It seems like everyone has a flag and a camp and an ideology, and each day, everyone goes to war. Genuine interaction characterized by authentic interest in learning does not happen, not online, not on television, not on radio, not in person. Instead, each morning, people show up with their bag of grievances, their agendas, their biases and bigotry, and they clash all day long, until it’s time to belly up to the bar.
The old virtues are gone: common courtesy, assuming the best, measured speech, grace, communication, and understanding. Few repent of their own sin because they are too busy fingering sin in others. Being positive and constructive and useful and productive—all overwhelmed by slander, assault, condemnation and criticism.
When people are serious about good conduct, love, grace, forgiveness, peace, mercy and humility, there is always a Divine spark behind it. God sheds his love abroad in our hearts, and our heads follow. When people are deceived into believing behavior does not matter, words are weapons, hate and condemnation are acceptable, even useful, pride and presumption are desirable, there is always a demonic impulse behind it.
When we boil it all down to the essentials, it is actually that black or white.
Either I am in the Spirit, allowing God to clean out my skeletons, or I’m in darkness, allowing the enemy to rule with guilt, manipulation, lies and condemnation. Conviction of sin by the Holy Spirit leads to godly repentance and life. Condemnation, guilt and the approval of sin by the enemy leads to worsening circumstances, and death.
If we want a good society, we need good hearts, and if we want good hearts, we need new hearts, hearts redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, new hearts filled with the goodness of God, the only way to have renewed minds, right thinking, thoughtfulness, and love.
“If you will not have God (and He is a jealous God), you should pay your respects to Hitler or Stalin.” T.S. Eliot
