Weep for America: a Generation of Air-Heads

Check out this video by Mark Dice: what do everyday Americans know about the birth of their country?

Uh, virtually nothing.

They think we won our independence from China in 1872.

They think our Founding Fathers included Jesse Ventura and John Wilkes Booth. And also somebody named “Jeremiah.”

They are not new arrivals from countries far away, but home-grown Americans–disabled by an American public school education.

It’s hard to hold on to something that you don’t value.

It’s going to be hard to hold on to America.

MD: What country did we declare independence from to celebrate the 4th of July?

Respondent: I dunno. I don’t know.

MD: What is the purpose of the 4th of July celebrations?

Female Respondent: I’m gonna turn it to the guy in the USA shirt!

Male Respondent: Fireworks!

MD: A little more specific…

Female Respondent: Celebrating our independence!

MD: A little more specific? Independence from…? A country? Step in here any time… Which country was that?

Female Respondent: History was not my subject. I slept through that class.

MD: Happy 4th of July!

Second Female Respondent: Thank-you! Happy 4th to you guys.

MD: When Jesse Ventura, John Wilkes Boothe, and the other founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, what year was that?

Second Female Respondent: 1970…sorry 1870-something…but I don’t remember the specific year.
