Scalia Still SE

Antonin Scalia the ‘Fool’

By Dr. Everett Piper – President Oklahoma Wesleyan University

“God assumed from the beginning that the wise of the world would view Christians as fools…and He has not been disappointed. Devout Christians are destined to be regarded as fools in modern society. We are fools for Christ’s sake. We must pray for courage to endure the scorn of the sophisticated world. If I have brought any message today, it is this: Have the courage to have your wisdom regarded as stupidity. Be fools for Christ. And have the courage to suffer the contempt of the sophisticated world.” -Antonin Scalia

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was a “fool.”

He was a “fool” for believing in human equality: “To pursue the concept of racial entitlement… is to reinforce… the way of thinking that produced race slavery, race privilege and race hatred.”

He was a “fool” for believing in parents’ rights: “A right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children is among the ‘unalienable Rights’ with which the Declaration of Independence proclaims ‘all men . . . are endowed by their Creator.”

He was a “fool” for believing in God: “One of the reasons God has been good to us is that we have done him honor….”

He was a “fool” for believing in the meaning of words: “If the constitution is… [an] empty bottle into which each generation is going to pour the liquid that it desires… you [are] essentially [saying] to your judges, ‘Come govern us.’”

He was a “fool” for believing in human freedom: “Today’s decree says that my Ruler, and the Ruler of 320 million Americans coast-to-coast, is a majority of the nine lawyers on the Supreme Court. This practice of constitutional revision by an unelected committee of nine… robs the People of the most important liberty they asserted in the Declaration of Independence and won in the Revolution of 1776: the freedom to govern themselves.”

He was a “fool” for believing in marriage: “To allow… [marriage] to be considered and resolved by a select, patrician, highly unrepresentative panel of nine is to violate a principle even more fundamental than no taxation without representation: no social transformation without representation.”

All his life, as he “sought justice, loved mercy and walked humbly with his God,” Antonin Scalia was an obedient, humble, and “foolish” follower of Christ. Today, as he stands before the Creator of the universe (as all of us, someday, are destined to do), is it foolish to believe that Judge Scalia now knows beyond all doubt that, indeed, the “foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of man”?

“What ship has a crew
of taxmen thieves and fishermen
who decide in the howling storm
to make a small sleeping carpenter
their captain?
Yes, a ship of fools
but there are fools and
those who only appear to be.”

Simon Jenkins

“Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.” 1 Corinthians 3:18
