The New Killing Fields

They said they didn’t know.

Even as the oily black smoke rose from the crematoria and ashes rained down from the sky, they still said they didn’t know.

But local residents knew enough to sift the ashes looking for gold.

The truth was that most deliberately chose not to know, even when testimony of atrocities leaked out; even when survivors told their stories, warning people to flee.

One who did know was Moshe the beadle, a tragic character in Elie Wiesel’s Night. But when he told what he knew, it fell on deaf ears:

He told his story and that of his companions. The Jews… were made to dig huge graves, and when they had finished their work, the Gestapo began theirs. Without passion, without haste, they slaughtered their prisoners. Each one had to go up to the hole and present his neck. Babies were thrown into the air and the machine gunners used them as targets. This was in the forest of Galicia, near Kolomaye. How had Moshe the Beadle escaped? Miraculously…

The deafness of unknowing was not confined to Moshe’s village. Whole governments closed their ears and chose not to know. Whole nations suddenly lost not only hearing, but their eyesight as well, even as photos of the genocide leaked out. Even the United States chose not to hear or see for a very long time. When it did hear, see and act, it was too late for millions.

What about now? What about the here and now in the Middle East?

The West—especially the liberal West–is again choosing not to know, at least not in the real meaning of “knowing;” that is, putting knowledge into action. The West, including America, once again remains almost completely unseeing and unhearing even as the atrocities pile up and tens of thousands of Iraqis, with nothing but the clothes on their backs and nowhere to hide, have fled the invading barbarians.

The new Assyrians coming down like the wolf on the fold; the new Mongol hordes leaving piles of bodies behind them; the new Vikings plundering, pillaging and killing; the new einsatzgruppen are now named ISIS. ISIS continues to terrorize Syria and Iraq while their ideological brethren in the rest of the Middle East also breathe fire against Jews and Christians.

Children are beheaded. Christian women are taken as captives and pan sold as sex slaves. Men are crucified and left to rot in the public squares. Thousands have fled to the mountains, there to die of hunger and thirst as the Beast inexorably slouches toward Mr. Sinjar and beyond.

The pope deplores violence and begs the United States to quit supplying arms to terrorists. In Iraq itself, an MP breaks down into sobs, pleading for the lives of her people much as Queen Esther of old must have pleaded for her people, the Jews.

But her tearful cries have been viewed a mere 33,199 times on YouTube.

The city of Mosul’s Archbishop Nikodimos Daoud goes on television, frantically telling the story of his church, his eyes fixed in stunned horror while he relates the Muslim genocide against Iraq’s Christians. His YouTube video has received only 66,852 views at the writing of this article.

How often have the pleas of the Iraqi PM and the archbishop been broadcast on CNN, NBC, CBS or other mainstream media? Where are the heart-numbing images of the children waiting to be killed or already dead—children like the uncomprehending lamb in the photo below?

While our president is claiming Muslims built the very fabric of our nation and our former president proclaimed Islam as a religion of peace, Muslims are tearing apart the very fabric of the Middle East. And our president goes golfing, showing by example how much he cares. We can pretty much conclude our present government won’t do much.

What about Muslims themselves?

Are we hearing from so-called Muslim moderate voices here in the U.S. and abroad? Does anyone hear an overwhelming chorus of condemnation from moderates as Christianity is being exterminated from the Middle East, its human and historical footprint in danger of being completely and irrevocably erased? Anyone? Anyone?

Among the feckless Christian pastors and priests who have passively stood by and watched the carnage while proclaiming Islam is a religion of peace, is there even one who is now willing to stand up and proclaim that it is more and more apparent that Allah is a god of War and Mohammed the prophet a precursor of as well as an example for the butchers, the rapers and the widow makers that comprise ISIS?

Among the academicians who tore apart Samuel Huntington’s thesis about the clash of civilizations, are there a few who might now begin to reassess their academic theories and to admit the reality that “Islam’s borders are bloody and so are its innards?” As Huntington wrote: “No single statement in my Foreign Affairs article attracted more critical comment than: ‘Islam has bloody borders.’ I made that judgment on the basis of a casual survey of intercivilizational conflicts. Quantitative evidence from every disinterested source conclusively demonstrates its validity.”

How about it, professors? Might it be time to put down your cognac and cigars; time to actually start thinking about reality instead of fantasy?

The world is waiting for all of you: Princes of government, prophets of media, priests of the Church and kings of academia.

Uncover your ears, eyes and mouths. Look, see and hear.

Know, speak and act.

It soon will be too late.
