Cruz Shames Senate Democrats and Defends Religious Liberty

Senate Republicans blocked legislation on Wednesday in a 56-43 vote that would require companies to provide birth control coverage in the healthcare plans of their employees. The bill was sponsored by Senators Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.) and was put forward to try and reverse the Supreme Court’s ruling last month that upheld the First Amendment of companies like Hobby Lobby.  The Justices ruled against government mandates of certain employers in providing birth-control coverage of abortificiant drugs that go against religious held beliefs.

Senator Ted Cruz spoke directly to Senate Democrats and President Obama in his prepared speech against the legislation.  Cruz began his speech by defining what the government mandate is really all about. “Nobody, nobody is talking about restricting access to contraceptives. What we are talking about is the federal government using brute force to force people to pay for abortion-inducing drugs of others against their religious faiths.”

Cruz further demonstrated how the Democrats assault on the First Amendment is changing the language of the Amendment so that both the free speech protections and the free exercise rights would be repealed. He stated, “Where have we entered when the Bill of Rights is become a partisan matter?”
