Obama Surgeon General Pick: Banning Guns Part of Medicine

Will they ever learn? Probably not.

Almost immediately after getting burned by his nomination of Debo Adegbile to lead the civil rights division at the Department of Justice, President Obama is back to his old ways again. In an environment of politicizing everything, the president has chosen another controversial nominee to the Senate for confirmation, this time for Surgeon General.

One thing that makes Vivek Hallegere Murthy so radical is his anti-Second Amendment stance on guns. Murphy has publicly referred to guns as a “healthcare issue.”

According to Katie Pavlich at Townhall:

Dr. Vivek Hallegere Murthy is the president and founder of Doctors for America, which grew from the campaign organization that was called Doctors for Obama, started in 2008. The organization has advocated for a number of liberal initiatives, including strongly supporting the passage of Obamacare and Medicaid expansion. The group has also been supportive of the Obama administration’s failed push for expanding gun control laws in 2013.

Murthy’s Doctors for America, which has pushed Congress to ban “assault” weapons and high-capacity magazines, is being dubbed, “Docs vs. Glocks” by it’s opponents.

Investors Business Daily reported on Murthy’s anti-gun tweets:

Tired of politicians playing politics w/ guns, putting lives at risk b/c they’re scared of NRA. Guns are a health care issue.

And in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook massacre, Murthy tweeted: “NRA press conference disappointing but predictable — blame everything in the world except guns for the Newtown tragedy. #wakeup.”

In a recent statement, the NRA has made their position abundantly clear regarding President Obama’s selection of Murthy:

The National Rifle Association strongly opposes the confirmation of Vivek Hallegere Murthy, M.D., M.B.A., as United States Surgeon General…The public must trust that the Surgeon General’s actions are based on empirical and scientific evidence, rather than political or ideological motives. In this regard, Dr. Murthy’s record of political activism in support of radical gun control measures raises significant concerns…

The National Rifle Association is also urging its five million members to strongly oppose Murthy’s nomination, and in a letter to Senate leadership, NRA Director Chris Cox has asked the senators to oppose this nomination.

Murthy has already survived an initial vote by the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, and a full Senate vote is expected to come sometime in the near future. Despite Majority Leader Harry Reid’s nuking of  the filibuster, red state Democrats, sitting in the hot seat for the 2014 elections, are going to have a very hard explaining a vote for a hardcore, radical anti-Second Amendment activist. With the albatross of Obamacare already hanging around their necks, hopefully they won’t be in the mood to add the political dead weight of Murthy’s confirmation to their reelection chances.
