Thanks to Delta Airlines, Georgia’s religious liberty bill may be in for a crash landing. The Atlanta-based company is trying to tip the scales against a Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) that’s stalling in the Georgia House, thanks to Speaker David Ralston. With just five days left on the Assembly’s calendar, Ralston still hasn’t put SB 129 on the floor for a vote — arguing that Georgia doesn’t need the bill. He claims, “we have the First Amendment” — which, if Ralston noticed, didn’t do a whole lot to protect Hobby Lobby, weddings vendors, and dozens of other Christians — like Dr. Eric Walsh.
The Californian was hired by Georgia to run its state Department of Public Health. But shortly after accepting the job and preparing to move his family to the Peach State, his new office called and asked for copies of sermons he’d delivered on the weekends at his church as a lay pastor. The next day, Dr. Walsh was fired. Like far too many people, the government not only scrutinized him for his religious beliefs — but used them against him. (Watch his shocking story from Liberty Institute here.)
The Left is systematically targeting these men and women for their faith — in spite of their constitutional rights. Without a RFRA, Christians have one less weapon to defend themselves against an aggressive government intent on stripping faith from the public square. For now, Ralston says the only way he’ll bring the bill up for a vote is if people demand it. If you live in Georgia, oblige him!
