The American Revolution was born from a spiritual foundation of the Great Awakening. Pastors and patriots rose up to fight side by side.

Today America needs another revival in our nation that will unify believers and patriots in an unprecedented movement of spirituality coupled with patriotism.

History reveals how the two are intertwined.

As Matthew Staver writes:

New England pastor Nathaniel Whitaker preached a stirring message before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in which he said, “We sin against God and nature, when we tamely resign our rights to tyrants, or quietly submit to public oppressors, if it be in our power to defend ourselves.”

The fiery orator and patriot, Patrick Henry, perhaps best known for his “Give me liberty or give me death” speech, said, “The American Revolution was the grand operation, which seemed to be assigned by the Deity to the men of this age in our country.”

The Founders believed that “Religion and Morality” were the twin pillars upon which America was built. By “religion” they meant faith that arose from a Judeo-Christian belief system.

John Adams said, “Our Constitution is made only for a moral and a religious people.” George Washington went so far as to say that anyone who undermines these twin pillars is not a patriot.

Many contemporary patriots agree with the Founders and say that Christianity is the single foundation upon which American public morality was based and the only foundation for our representative government. They agree with Founder Benjamin Rush, who said,

“The only foundation for a useful education in a republic is to be laid in Religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments.”
