Hills to Die Upon and Principled Stances

avatar

What does it mean to make a principled stance?

It could mean many things or it could mean nothing at all. Yet so much has been made of the phrase as of late.

In truth, when we stand before the pearly gates, will the Almighty pat us on the back because we made a principled stance and abstained from an election?

Will He say well done my good and faithful servant because we continued to rail on the eventual winner of said election or will he praise us for not doing so?

Will He mention it at all?

Does the Ancient of Days care whether you are a Constitutionalist?

Will my registration as a Republican, a Libertarian or Democrat really be accounted unto me as righteousness?

Will the ways in which I join or break from my parties line really be counted as wheat and chaff?

1 Corinthians 1:20

Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

It is curious the hills men chose to die upon and the battles they think they are fighting. Have you actually joined the battle?  Have you actually found a hill of moral superiority? Have you actually ever died on one?

If you have never found yourself so spiritually exhausted that you can barely put pen to paper, or in today’s terms, finger to keyboard, then you are not engaged in battle my friend.

Judging from the economic success of many so-called principled journalists is see around me, I suspect that the previous question would be met with three successive “No’s.” You’re not fighting; you’re trolling for clicks or, like AC/DC, you’ve found a formula that works so you keep playing the same three chords over and over again.

That’s not a principled stance. That’s a business model.

Some, like the heroic culture warriors here at Barbwire.com, or FRC.org, or AFA.net fight the same battles and die daily, on the same hills, that the forerunners of our faith have been dying upon for centuries; both literally and figuratively.

Most receive no compensation but many are as talented, journalistically, as any writers on any site anywhere in the world; yet they happily labor for free.

If there is a stance that our omniscient Creator sees as principled, I would wager that sounding the alarm day after day, year after year, decade after decade without regard to one’s bank account, reputation or public standing would be one.

Then again, that’s just the opinion of a self-taught Christian journalist that writes for free and is willing to die on every hill he has ever dared to stand upon.

Only a fool, or a disingenuous money-grubber, would bother standing for anything that wasn’t worth dying for.
