The Call for a Hearty Party

Instead of withstanding the strong winds of political turmoil by fidelity to first principles, the Republican Party, tragically, has succumbed to forces destructive of its charter, from within and without. Founded in 1854 as the anti-slavery party, when Whigs and Democrats were largely in favor of slavery’s continuance, even in the territories and in the new states, the Republican Party firmly relied upon faith, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution in promotion of this “new nation, conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” in the words of Abraham Lincoln, first Republican President, 1861-65.

Through blood and tears the Republican Party appealed to the conscience of a nation to abolish slavery though it cost 600,000 lives on the battlefields of the Civil War, appealing to men of good will with the words of the Declaration; “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Through fidelity to first principles Republicans insured this experiment in self-government would continue for another 162 years.

Today, the Republican presumptive nominee is revealed a racist, and the party of Lincoln is found impotent, incapable of confronting a lawless Democrat president, even with majorities in the House and Senate, a Republican Party so fractured and weak, it fails solving critical problems facing the nation, problems that metastasize, threatening death.

These are conditions similar to those found in 1854. Strife, violence, division and chaos characterize both eras. Political parties, found practically indistinguishable, are diseased with corruption, entrenched in Washington, mindful only of a lust for power, careless of the public good.

Surely it is time for a Constitution Party akin to the original Republican Party, an energetic and inspired return to the Founder’s vision, articulated so well in the Declaration, made real in the Constitution.

No new political party can hope to thrive without forming coalitions as Republicans did with Free Soil Democrats and anti-slavery Whigs in the 1850s and 1860s.   The foundation laid by the Tea Party in 2009 must be built upon in the construction of this new party, bringing all patriotic, first-principled Americans together around our most cherished values: Liberty, and Justice, for All.  Unless we commence rebuilding the rule of law, all is lost.  Unless we stop nominating clowns, the circus will roll on.

This renewal must necessarily start with a focus on Lincoln’s inspired proclamation: “It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proved by all history, that those nations only are blest whose God is the Lord. “ This is a tall order in a nation where half the people are found hostile to God.

Some say, therefore, it is too late, that we will never do what is required, that the corruption is too great, the patriot fervor too weak, our faith misplaced, the contending factions too enraged to accomplish this enormous turn around.

But others remember it was said of Washington, his army of farmers and the Founders, they were insane to suppose a military victory over the British, yet, a miracle happened. They said it was the end of the Republic to see a Civil War, but somehow we survived, both sides praying to the same God.  So many doubted we’d survive the Great Depression or WWII, but God smiled on this nation, so blessed, and we prevailed, praying for deliverance.

The miracle can happen again, but only with our reverent attention to His voice:

If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place.… [2 Chronicles 7:13-15]
