What Has Compromise with Principles Gotten Us?

Here are a few nuggets to ponder. Even if you fancy yourself an intellectual, you’ll probably get the point…

Compromise: This is reason enough to hate politics, aka the “art of compromise.” It might as well be called the “art of surrendering your principles.”

What has compromise gotten us? An income tax that takes more of your money than your church tithe does. A federal government that is the the antithesis of the founders’ small-and-limited ideal. Regulation of every human activity to a micro degree. Doubt it? How many gallons does your toilet flush? Compromises in Congress and the ones even more easily arrived at in the halls of bureaucracy increased the number of federal crimes to 4,450, as of 2007, 50 percent more than in 1980. If a migrant does something wrong, how about the sponsor being held equally responsible? If the immigrant holds up a liquor store, the host can be prosecuted for the crime, too. This principle seems to work when someone co-signs for a car loan. How’s that for compromise?

Bulletin: Even the Washington Post says Hillary Clinton doesn’t tell the truth: “By any reasonable measure, Clinton’s claim that 40 percent of guns are sold at gun shows or over the Internet – and thus evade background checks through a loophole – does not stand up to scrutiny. … Clinton earns Three Pinocchios…”
