The Philosophy of Satan

avatar

On August 22, 2015, the largest pro-life demonstration in American history was held outside Planned Parenthood locations in cities from coast to coast.

You may have missed this momentous occasion because the main-stream media refused to cover it. It seems they had better things to do. Most of our national politicians also failed to take note, including many of those running for the highest office in the land. Well, that’s democracy for you.

The prince of darkness, however, did not neglect to notice. And why shouldn’t he? The devil is always “in the know,” and he is the driving force behind the pro-death movement in this country.

If a million American Christians are going to get off their duffs to protest, the least the father of lies can do is send out a delegation to meet them. Abortions are performed in the United States at the rate of about 3,000 babies per day. Satan doesn’t want that harvest threatened.

Consequently, pro-life demonstrators in Detroit encountered a counter-protest staged by a small delegation from the Satanic Temple. It is fitting that the author of death would establish his temple in the city most representative of America’s dying vitality and liberal policies.

But this was actually just the latest in a series of public gestures made by satanic groups in recent months. In May and June, the Satanic Temple filed lawsuits challenging Missouri’s abortion waiting period. This earned them high-praise from Slate, Salon and other leftist blogs.

Then, on July 25, the group unveiled a one-ton bronze statue of “Baphomet” (an avatar of Satan) in Detroit. They charged $25 a ticket at the dedication ceremony, and the proceeds went to pro-abortion groups.

Despite being so small, the satanic counter-protest caught the attention of many for being so bizarre. Two women knelt on the sidewalk, their hands bound with rope, as other participants stood behind them and dumped gallons of milk on their heads while chanting “Hail Satan” and screaming obscenities.

This demeaning display, performed directly before a throng of Christians, was reminiscent of the early days of the Church under Roman rule, when sorcerers with large popular followings would openly compete with Christian preachers.

The counter-protest had meaning on at least two levels, both of them satanic.

On one level, it functioned as an actual occult rite. According to Church Militant blog: “Milk bathing is considered to be lower level occult magic….In some occult writings, a relationship and ritual is drawn by using milk as a symbol for a lactating mother and the milk bathing as a sign of worship to a mother earth goddess (Gaia).”

As historian Diane Moczar writes, there is a “great resemblance between manifestations of the occult that [are] widely separated geographically and chronologically….This lack of variety in manifestations despite wide separation argues both for a common source, Satan, and for that dark angel’s peculiar lack of originality.”

But the display also had a political meaning. Satanists and other pro-abortion extremists often like to accuse pro-lifers of being “forced birthers.” Hence, going by this interpretation, the spilled milk was meant to symbolize the women being forced to breast feed against their will.

Although this interpretation appears to be, at first glance, less creepy than that of the occult ritual, it is in fact no less sinister in its implications. Indeed, it conveys in simple terms the whole philosophy of Satan.

According to public statements put out by the Satanic Temple, “Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!” and “Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!” What perfectly apposite slogans for the “pro-choice” movement!

Besides the overt references to Satan, are not these the same messages blasted at us daily by corporate advertisers? Could not these same basic ideas be used in the latest “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas” commercial? Whether they know it or not, large numbers of Americans have already internalized these selfish, satanic principles.

No wonder the persecution is coming.

Consider, as a slight example, the “Celebgate” hacking scandal of 2014. Hackers posted over 500 private pictures of various celebrities on the image board 4chan, including naked photos of actress Jennifer Lawrence. This was a disgusting invasion of privacy and a heinous theft. However, Lawrence’s reaction to the leak controversy was also troubling.

In an interview with Vanity Fair last October, Lawrence explained that she had taken the nude photos of herself to show to her long-distance boyfriend. She apparently felt obligated to do this because, according to her, “Either your boyfriend is going to look at porn or he is going to look at you.”

The statement struck me for being so pathetic. The belief Lawrence implicitly professes here is identical to the one contained in the “forced birther” accusation. It is the idea that people really have no control over themselves.

By this reasoning, if you take away access to abortion, then you are effectively forcing women to give birth—because it is impossible for people to refuse sex. Similarly, in Lawrence’s case: if a woman does not take nude photos of herself, then this is tantamount to her forcing her boyfriend to watch porn—because men have no self-control.

And it is the same thinking which says that if you experience feelings of same-sex attraction, you have no power to change or abstain from these desires, but must succumb to them and self-identify as “homosexual.”

The suggestion is that men and women are at the mercy of their hormones. They have no free will, at least not in the sense of being able to exercise control over their lower urges. The higher-mind is enslaved to the lower-mind. The virtue of abstinence is a sham.

Why?

Because, according to this understanding, humans are nothing more than trousered apes. They have no will, mind, soul or spirit—and no access to God’s saving grace. This is the philosophy of Satan. He knows better, of course, but this is the damned lie he tries to sucker us into believing through a thousand different ruses.

The Holocaust survivor and psychologist Viktor Frankl, who authored the book Man’s Search for Meaning, once wrote that: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Some people seem to possess the natural, inborn strength to exercise the level of poise and self-control Frankl articulates here. God bless them. But the rest of us (myself included) need a lot of help in resisting temptation. Thankfully that help exists in Christ Jesus.

For as it is written, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance (Luke 5.31-32). Jesus wholeheartedly wants to help those of us whom Satan has already done a number on.

Each one of us is on the front lines of the battle with Satan. It is not a struggle occurring “out there,” nor somewhere in the distant past or future. Rather, the battle is waged in ourselves, against our own lusts and worldly desires.

Because of Christ’s death on a cross, the victory is already won. He has crucified the body with its passions, so that we are no longer enslaved to sin and death. It is finished (John 19.30).

When the Son of God became the Son of Man, He gave the Spirit a home in our flesh. By doing this, God chose to make the human body the battleground against the forces of Satan.

Christ has opened up to us via the Holy Spirit all the grace we need to overcome the world, resist temptation, and become the best version of ourselves. Yet it remains a struggle, a cross we must freely choose to accept every day. If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (Matthew 16.24).

When we put to death the desires of the flesh, for example by refusing a drink or eschewing lustful thoughts, it is really Satan who is routed. But whenever we succumb to temptation—the devil gloats.

Therefore, Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil…Taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the Evil One…For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6.11-16-12).
