‘No Gender December’ Campaign Seeks to Ban ‘Gendered’ Toys

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…for some unspecified, but vaguely virtuous, reason. But social reconstruction never takes a holiday.

As you buy your Christma…er, seasonal gifts, take the opportunity to remind your children what the holiday is all about: eliminating gender.

You see, the real villains that dash your lil’ cherub’s visions of a sugarplum future aren’t the Grinch, Mr. Potter, or Ebenezer Scrooge. They’re toys. Those evil, “gendered” toys.

A new campaign has identified this danger, calling on parents, corporations, and government officials to stop the buying and selling of toys based on the archaic dichotomy of boys and girls.

Australian senator Larissa Waters has launched an awareness campaign called No Gender December about the consequences of gender stereotypes in toys in the lead-up to Christmas.

“Children shouldn’t have to conform to gender stereotypes. Boys might be interested in toys that are marketed as for girls and vice versa. This isn’t about some toys being off limits. It’s about children being free to play with whatever toys interest them without fear of being judged or bullied,” Waters said.

“Outdated stereotypes about girls and boys and men and women perpetuate gender inequality, which feeds into very serious problems such as domestic violence and the gender pay gap.”

Yes parents, if you give your son a toy truck and your daughter a princess doll, you are tacitly encouraging domestic violence. Feel the guilt.

The Australian campaign mimics similar efforts in Europe, where all uber-enlightened ideas come from, to put pressure on toy retailers like Toys R’ Us to stop selling toys specifically for boys or girls, eliminate the pink and blue sections, and create a more “gender-inclusive approach” to toys.

The No Gender December website includes slogans like “stereotypes don’t belong under my tree” and “no bullying over the rainbow,” warning us that the toys you buy your child for Christmas may have the power to turn your darling tabula rasa into either a bigoted bully or an oppressed victim of society. Possibly both.

So they’re asking parents to pledge their support for ‘No Gender December’ (“because there is no place for gender stereotypes under my Christmas tree”) and buy their kids’ toys accordingly.

That sounds dangerously close to recognizing that parents have the rights/responsibilities to raise their own children, and to freely make those choices according to their values.

But only if the parent’s values are the State’s values.

We are calling on all Australian Members of Parliament and the Senate to uphold Australia’s support of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child and legislate against the marketing of toys along gender lines and to assist in the education of parents, carers and teachers on the impacts of this practice on our children’s development.

Who knew that marketing Creepy Crawlers to little boys was against almighty international law? That selling American Girl dolls to American girls violated “the rights of the child”? We’d better pass another law to protect our children from the evils of gender distinction.

For we must now eliminate not just gender inequality, but gender distinction altogether.

In an interview with the campaign, sociologist Dr. Elizabeth Sweet says the mere thought that men and women are different is the real problem:

In essence, the “different and inferior” narratives that supported open discrimination against women in earlier eras have been replaced with the mantra of “different and equal”. But in truth, the very notions of difference continue to fuel numerous implicit processes that sustain gender inequality and constrain opportunities.

Notice it’s not “Equal Gender December.” It’s “No Gender December.” This moves beyond little girls building with Legos and little boys cooking in a play kitchen. If the “very notions of difference” create “inequality,” then we must completely reconstruct our society from the ground up…to ignore the most basic facets of our biology.

No more boys and girls clothing in stores…from now on, our children must wear gray unisex jumpsuits. Equality, you know.

No more boys and girls restrooms, of course. There is no difference, so why should there be any division?

True, some anatomical distinctions between male and female, which may be noted by observant toddlers, but that’s surely the fault of society not science. Hopefully we’ll progress toward keeping our babies genderless from birth. That’ll show biology.

By defining what something is, we likewise define it’s opposite, what this is not. Once upon a time, people believed that humans were special, the crowning glory of all the earth’s wonders, created by an everlasting God in His own image. That He made both male and female, distinct in design, and equal in dignity.

But we’ve long ago evolved beyond such nonsense. Now we believe we are animals, devoid of soul and purpose beyond brief existence and reproduction (and we’re not even so sure about the latter anymore). Even little things like distinct sexes boggle our enlightened minds.

It’s like the natural world keeps testifying to some grand design…but how can that be? If we are designed, that would mean we should respect our Designer and His design for us, and we couldn’t do that. Better instead to keep suppressing even the most self-evident truths in our search for equal esteem without intrinsic value (with government force wherever possible). What could possibly go wrong?
