Gov’t tells Pastors: Sin Against God or Go to Jail
By Rebekah Maxwell – BarbWire guest contributor
Preach gay weddings or go to jail: In case you missed the memo, the First Amendment doesn’t apply to you anymore. Not if you care more about following your conscience than pretend law-by-judge.
City officials in Idaho are trying to force two ministers to preach gay weddings or go to jail. For real.
They told Donald Knapp that he and his wife Evelyn, both ordained ministers who run Hitching Post Wedding Chapel, are required to perform such ceremonies or face months in jail and/or thousands of dollars in fines. The city claims its “non-discrimination” ordinance requires the Knapps to perform same-sex wedding ceremonies now that the courts have overridden Idaho’s voter-approved constitutional amendment that affirmed marriage as the union of a man and a woman.
Man, the slope sure was slippery on the way down, wasn’t it? Who knew there was an open jail cell waiting at the bottom? Remind me again how just two people loving each other will have no impact on our liberty. Unless we dissent, of course…then we’re made to care. And made to pay.
Ebola Update: After two weeks of spinmeisters regurgitating the “Don’t panic over the possible deadly pandemic, the government’s in control” bromides, the Democrats have suddenly seen the light on an Ebola travel ban. Or the poll numbers.
Yes, in a single newscycle, Democrats (like Kay Hagan in North Carolina, Mark Pryor in Arkansas, and Michelle Nunn in Georgia) have gone from echoing Obama’s line calling a travel ban unnecessary, harmful, or “fear-mongering,” to “calling on the President to implement travel plans” as “common sense protection.”
It is just common sense that we need a travel ban from West Africa,” Democratic pollster and analyst Doug Schoen told Newsmax on Saturday. “And Democrats have realized that in tight Senate races that hang in the balance it is common sense, not partisanship, that gives them the best chance of getting elected.
Imagine that. The same preventative travel ban that over two-thirds of Americans wanted to institute for our protection, that Republicans like Ted Cruz have been calling for openly, that the Democrats in our ruling class told us last week was “not on the table,” is suddenly “common-sense.” Could it be that “common-sense” is defined by Democrats as “whatever the People have been telling us for months that we’ve stubbornly ignored until we remembered our radical base is only 9% of the population.”
When we so distrust our government’s ability to handle a health crisis that families and communities begin enacting their own Ebola quarantines, that’s a sure sign the guv’ment has failed. And that’s about the time the Democrats have found “common sense.” Sounds about right.
Obama can’t draw crowd: Yes, he’s been an unmitigated disaster of an American executive, but sometimes one must feel bad for the Pretender-in-Chief. He’s had so many failures that his preferred reality can scarce conjure enough excuses to field them all. The one thing he always had was a talent for campaigning; he could always work the stump speech, fire up the adoring crowd, and forget about real life for a moment. But now, even his fans have deserted him.
President Barack Obama made a rare appearance on the campaign trail on Sunday with a rally to support the Democratic candidate for governor in Maryland, but early departures of crowd members while he spoke underscored his continuing unpopularity.
A steady stream of people walked out of the auditorium while he spoke, however, and a heckler interrupted his remarks.
“You’ve got to vote,” Obama repeated over and over at the Maryland rally…to their backs as they left.
Wow. There’s pathetic, and then there’s this. Obama, meet rock-bottom. He’s ready for his closeup, Mr. DeMille.
Secret amnesty?: Speaking of rock-bottom, Obama doesn’t think his policies have gotten our society quite there yet. So why not add amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants onto the pile. No, the laws haven’t changed, but that’s never stopped the Obamanation before. And now they’re stocking on green cards.
As Breitbart reports:
…the Obama administration has quietly begun preparing to issue millions of work authorization permits, suggesting the implementation of a large-scale executive amnesty may have already begun.
Unnoticed until now, a draft solicitation for bids issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Oct. 6 says potential vendors must be capable of handling a “surge” scenario of 9 million id cards in one year “to support possible future immigration reform initiative requirements.”
The request for proposals says the agency will need a minimum of four million cards per year. In the “surge,” scenario in 2016, the agency would need an additional five million cards – more than double the baseline annual amount for a total of 9 million.
“The guaranteed minimum for each ordering period is 4,000,000 cards. The estimated maximum for the entire contract is 34,000,000 cards,” the document says.
Amnesty for 34 million. How progressive of us. It must mean the economy has turned around, eh? And our security and prosperity is at record levels. That we can afford, not only to invite more people in to our borders than the total population of Australia, but to extra-legally fast-track their residence (and subsidize them as well)? Good news all around then. Except, you know, for the Americans.
Christian Mom faces death sentence in Pakistan: A land run by the purported religion of peace is set to execute an innocent woman just for being a Christian.
Last week, an appeals court in Pakistan has upheld the death sentence for a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who was falsely convicted of “blasphemy” (speaking against the prophet Muhammad) in 2010.
As the lone Christian household in her town, she was targeted for being a Christian when an argument broke out over a cup of water as she was picking fruit in a field with Muslim women. Asia Bibi was convicted on trumped up charges and sentenced to execution by hanging on November 8, 2010.
This wife and mother of five would be the first woman to be executed under Pakistan’s Shariah blasphemy law. Not only has she been sentenced to death, but she also has a price on her head issued by a radical Muslim cleric encouraging the Taliban to carry out her execution. Her husband and family have suffered for the past several years, fearing for their safety, but with the hope that her conviction may be overturned. Now that decision rests in Pakistan’s Supreme Court.
To review: Pakistan, one of America’s “allies,” ruled by laws from the “religion of peace,” considers it justice to execute an innocent woman for her faith. But, while sharia law will not protect Asia Bibi’s life and liberty, you and I must. As we saw with the case of Meriam Ibrahim, enough global outcry can influence unjust governments to right their own wrongs. Share Asia Bibi’s story and remind our world that faith is not a capital crime.
