German Pilots Union Calls For Another Strike

A union representing pilots at the Germany airline Lufthansa called for another strike Monday after contract talks broke down.

The Vereinigung Cockpit union declared that on Tuesday, pilots would not fly long-haul flights from Frankfurt airport, the Associated Press reported. The union is demanding that Lufthansa keep a transition payment for those pilots that want to retire early.

This latest strike is just the newest in a series of several short-term strikes in recent weeks.

However, due to tough competition from European budget airlines and major Gulf carriers, the airline wants to cut those sorts of retirement payments.

The union also said Lufthansa has not offered any compromise in resolving the issue.

“We feel compelled to take further industrial action as Lufthansa management has failed so far to table an offer worthy of compromise” the union told Agence France Presse (AFP).

“We remain open to a deal in order to avert strikes and we regret any inconvenience caused to customers,” the union added.

A spokesperson for Lufthansa warned of the possibility that up to 56 flights from Frankfurt could be affected by the strike.

“We can’t say at this point exactly how many will actually be cancelled,” the spokesman told AFP.

The spokesman concluded, “We also have long-haul flights leaving from Duesseldorf and Munich and these won’t be affected.”
