Church Leaders Hoist White Flag in Culture War

avatar

Failure to understand the nature of the enemy is a good way to lose a war. Lately it’s become the favorite foible of Church leaders.

The new pope got the ball rolling when he suggested the Roman Catholic Church ought to chill out about sodomy, abortion, adultery, whatever. They just aren’t that big a deal, says he.

Then the Southern Baptists have followed suit. Russell Moore, the relatively new president of the SBC’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, has suggested the church ought to flee the culture war—no more opposing abortion or same-sex mockmarriage. Raise high the white flag of surrender. The church must try to be more “winsome,” says he. (For a song to accompany this cowardice, see my blog for Oct. 28, 2013,  “A New Hymn for a Defeated Church.”

Why should the church shut up about social issues? Because, Moore explains, we don’t want to lose “alienated young believers”—who, you singularly un-perceptive man, have spent most of their lives in public schools, being taught that sodomy is a virtue, abortion a right, and the Bible a hateful hash of made-up stories designed to thwart the aims of social justice.

Who do these church leaders think they are—Senate Republicans? They’re crying “uncle” when the people of God have not yet begun to fight.

Why do “young believers”—if indeed this is true, and not just a projection from the minds of exalted high surrender monkeys—think the world is right to embrace sin, and the church wrong to reject it? If they do believe that, it’s only because the churches and Christian parents have refused to obey God’s command to teach their own children, and entrusted Christian children’s education to anti-Christian schools controlled by anti-Christian teachers’ unions.

You don’t have to have the military genius of Hannibal or Patton to figure out that allowing the enemy to train your troops is a very bad idea.

Gasp! Did I say “enemy”? That’s not very winsome, is it? Sorry, but I don’t do winsome. The teachers’ unions, the homosexual activists, the atheist militants, the abortion fans who chant “Hail, Satan,” and the statist schmucks who staff “human rights” agencies really are the enemy.

They must be defeated. Not charmed, not appeased, but put out of business. And the way to do that is by depriving them of their food and fuel—our children’s souls and minds.

We won’t convert them by any amount of winsome groveling. Their minds are closed; they are implacable. Unlike church leaders, they understand perfectly that a house divided will not stand. They are convinced that Christianity is wrong, stupid, out of date, contemptible, and an obstacle to their utopian humanist schemes. They want to get rid of Christianity, and they won’t stop until they do it.

They mean to do it, and are doing it, by using the schools and the media to fill young people’s minds with absurd but powerful visions of sexual freedom, economic equality, and cumbaya-loosey-goosey-party-time-forever gibberish. It works!

Of course it works. Look what they’re doing to our culture.

We can elect “conservative” politicians from now till Doomsday; but as long as the enemy controls the education of our children, we lose. And while we’re at it, we might point out that a steady diet of materialist, homosexual-celebrating, abortion-tolerant, adultery-exalting popular culture—movies, TV, music, books—has not exactly reinforced the Christian commitment of the parents, either.

Many churches have already gone all the way over the line, exchanging faithfulness to God for labyrinth walks, goddess worship, “inclusion” of alien religious concepts, and the inevitable “gay marriage.” That’s where these church leaders will lead us.

The alternative to surrender is to fight. How? St. Paul has told us how (Ephesians 6:10-17):

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God…”

And never mind trying to be winsome.
