Meriam Ibrahim and family re-arrested in Sudan

KHARTOUM, Sudan (June 24, 2014) – A lawyer for the Sudanese Christian woman sentenced to death and later freed says the woman and her family have been detained at an airport while trying to leave the country.

OneNewsNow — Eman Abdul-Rahim told The Associated Press that 27-year-old Meriam Ibrahim was held Tuesday along with two children and her husband at the international airport in Khartoum, the country’s capital. Abdul-Rahim did not elaborate and security officials did not respond to requests for comment.

Ibrahim married a Christian man from southern Sudan in a church ceremony in 2011. As in many Muslim nations, Muslim women in Sudan are prohibited from marrying non-Muslims, though Muslim men can marry outside their faith. By law, children must follow their father’s religion.

The court dropped Ibrahim’s charges and freed her after worldwide outrage.

Statement from International Christian Concern

In speaking with a member of Ibrahim’s legal defense this morning, ICC learned that Meriam, Daniel, and their two children were arrested for “national security concerns” by members of the Sudanese military.

According to that same defense lawyer, the Ibrahims were, at the time of this release, being held at a “National Security Office.” In speaking with ICC, Ibrahim’s defense expressed great concern over the situation, repeatedly stating that “no one can do anything.” The defense explained that no legal mechanism exists by which to intervene on the Ibrahims’ behalf. Some ICC sources also reported that the Ibrahims’ legal defense have been threatened with arrest by Sudanese authorities.

ICC’s Cameron Thomas says the grounds for holding the family are “absurd.”

“For the Sudanese state to allege that a mother of two, a [disabled] husband who [is confined] to a wheelchair because of muscular dystrophy, and two children pose a ‘national security threat’ to the state is absolutely absurd,” he says.

“We have to recognize that this is a state that operates on a day-to-day basis and cannot be considered trustworthy or cannot be trusted with being able to carry out a long-term policy with regard to standing by what it says,” he continues, “because this court very clearly said that Meriam is an innocent woman and should not be held on these ridiculous charges.”

Though the Ibrahims’ legal defense did not confirm the destination the Ibrahims were scheduled to fly to, the BBC has reported that Daniel stated his intention Monday to “leave for the U.S.” Unconfirmed reports, however, have speculated that the family was on its way to South Sudan, Daniel’s home country.

Hating Jesus: The American Left's War on Christianity

Matt Barber with Paul Hair

The secular left doesn’t merely have a disagreement with Christianity. These are not people with whom one may reason, compromise or even disagree. They are dedicated to evil. They demand nothing less than the abolition of the biblical worldview, and the destruction of Christ’s followers right along with it.

Now is the time to fight back. If you are someone, Christian or not, who refuses to see Christianity wiped out (like it ever could be) and your children indoctrinated into pure evil, then sitting on the sidelines is no longer an option.
