‘Devout Catholic’ Nancy Pelosi Scolds San Francisco Bishop for Defending Natural Marriage

avatar

Catholic “Bible scholar” Nancy Pelosi (CA-D) has now turned to scolding her hometown archbishop in San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, on marriage, claiming “We share our love of the Catholic faith and our city of San Francisco,” but also urging him to withdraw from his scheduled participation in the 2014 March for Marriage in Washington, D.C. on June 19. The notoriously liberal congresswoman issued her request to Archbishop Cordileone on June 13 in a letter that was subsequently obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Often ridiculously referring to the importance of her Catholic faith, the House Minority leader has nevertheless callously chosen to discard most of its sacred and relevant doctrines, including with regards to such issues as abortion, premarital sex and same-sex “marriage.” She has repeatedly made a mockery of her so-called faith in favor of the liberal, godless Democrat agenda. Like most in her party, the truth always takes a back seat when it comes to pandering to their liberal base of voters. Apparently, Pelosi has been spending much more time reading from the Democrat playbook instead of the Bible or the Catholic catechism — or more specifically, Matthew 19:4-6. Try arguing with Jesus, Nancy.

Pelosi’s rift with the Catholic Church was clearly demonstrated in 2013 when Cardinal Raymond Burke, the chief justice at the Vatican, ordered that the former speaker of the House be denied Communion because of her outspoken support for baby butchery (a.k.a. abortion). At the time Burke cautioned, “I fear for Congresswoman Pelosi if she does not come to understand how gravely in error she is.”

While conveniently pretending to be oblivious to the official Catholic teaching on marriage, Pelosi expressed outraged over the fact that Archbishop Cordileone continues to protect holy matrimony rather than the demonically inspired version of homosexual unholy mock-rimony.

The House Minority leader claimed that many of the March for Marriage participants have displayed “disdain and hate toward LGBT persons,” and she accused the archbishop of supporting “venom masquerading as virtue.” (Having personally participated in the 2013 event, let me emphatically state that Pelosi’s claims have absolutely no basis in reality. In fact, before the march even began last year, Brian S. Brown, the President of the National Organization for Marriage, warned all of the marchers that he had heard about the potential unwelcome presence of a contingent from the despicable Westboro Baptist Church, and he specifically repudiated their vile message.)

Cordileone also participated in last year’s event by leading marchers in prayer while the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the Hollingsworth v. Perry case, which challenged the constitutionality of California’s 2008 ballot initiative and marriage amendment, known informally as Prop 8.

As the Daily Caller reported:

Along with Mick Huckabee and Rick Santorum, Archbishop Cordileone is one of the featured speakers for the march, alongside Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, and religious leaders from a variety of Christian denominations. Cordileone, a staunch defender of traditional marriage, has been called “the father of Prop 8,” having done extensive fundraising and organizing to ensure its passing. He is currently the Chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Subcommittee on the Promotion and Defense of Marriage.

In a letter released on Monday, Cordileone further explained that he is required “as a bishop, to proclaim the truth — the whole truth — about the human person and God’s will for our flourishing … especially the truth about marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife. That is what I will be doing on June 19th.”

Bill Donohue of the Catholic League was also quick to call out Pelosi for her disingenuous display of selective outrage. “When gays go naked in the streets of San Francisco, and mock Catholicism in patently obscene ways, Pelosi is never offended,” he noted, “What offends her is her archbishop’s public defense of the Church’s teachings on marriage.”

Not surprisingly, Pelosi quoted Pope Francis’ famous and intentionally misunderstood statement about homosexuals, writing, “If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge him?” The fuller quote makes it abundantly clear, however, that the Pope was not affirming homosexuality or counterfeit “gay” marriage: “The problem is not having this tendency, no, we must be brothers and sisters to one another, and there is this one and there is that one. The problem is in making a lobby of this tendency: a lobby of misers, a lobby of politicians, a lobby of masons, so many lobbies.” In other words, the Pope was attempting to draw a clear distinction between a person’s private struggles with homosexuality and the public demand for legal recognition, societal approval and the church’s sanctioning of blatantly deviant behavior.

During a 2011 interview with the National Catholic Register, Archbishop Cordileone explained in greater detail the reasoning for his opposition to same-sex “marriage.”

“This is not a matter of religion,” Cordileone insisted, “This is how every society has understood marriage in all of human history. The truth is: They’re imposing their new idea of marriage — an idea no society has ever had before — on everyone else. This is a very serious social experiment that will have dire consequences.”

Pelosi has on an earlier occasions appealed to her “faith” with regards to same-sex “marriage.” In 2012, she ludicrously stated, “My religion has, compels me – and I love it for it – to be against discrimination of any kind in our country, and I consider this a form of discrimination.” The key word in that statement is “my” because she has obviously fabricated her own brand of false religion.

“When people say that opposition to gay marriage is discriminatory, like opposition to interracial marriage, they cannot also say their views won’t hurt anybody else,” responded Cordileone in a 2013 USA Today interview. “They seek to create and enforce a new moral and legal norm that stigmatizes those who view marriage as the union of husband and wife. … It’s not kind, and it doesn’t seem to lead to a ‘live and let live’ pluralism.”

Fortunately, Cordileone has chosen to dismiss the baseless criticisms of nominal Catholics like Pelosi. “The ultimate attack of the evil one,” he has boldly asserted, “is the attack on marriage. This is a critical time for marriage in our country, as marriage amendments are being struck down by federal courts and appeals of these decisions are being made.” That, by the way, echoes the words of Pope Francis who, as an Argentinian cardinal in 2010, described “gay marriage” as a “clear rejection of the law of God” and “a move of the Father of Lies who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God.”
