Rally to Celebrate Bergdahl Homecoming Canceled Amid Deserter Claims

The scheduled June 28 rally honoring the favorite son of Hailey, Idaho, was spiked over worries that the expected turnout would be too large, city administrator Heather Dawson says. But his fellow soldiers have been speaking out, saying the rescued serviceman actually deserted.

The hero’s welcome awaiting Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was canceled Wednesday by officials in his hometown.

The scheduled June 28 rally honoring the favorite son of Hailey, Idaho, was spiked over worries that the expected turnout would be too large, city administrator Heather Dawson told Reuters.

Organizers in the town of about 8,000 had planned to honor the 28-year-old Bergdahl despite widespread charges that he deserted his Army comrades in Afghanistan five years ago.
