NYC Schools Accommodate ‘Trans’ Students, Ignore Morality

The trend toward accommodating transgender students continues across the U.S. as New York City’s new guidelines for the nation’s largest school district take effect.
The NYC Department of Education’s guidelines – announced last month – allow transgender students to share locker rooms, restrooms, and even the same hotel rooms with members of the opposite sex. In addition, the guidelines take into account those students’ “gender expression” and “gender identity” – the latter defined as “a person’s inner sense of being male or female, regardless of their biological gender assignment at birth.”
Laurie Higgins, a cultural analyst with the Illinois Family Institute, wonders how schools got to the point where policies are being revised to accommodate the inner feelings of students.
“We are now going to change the entire way that we deal with restrooms, locker rooms, [and] sports. Now they’re even including hotel rooms in this New York City policy for overnight excursions [such as] field trips,” she laments. “When did we decide that these are going to be based on ‘inner senses’ of being male or female, as opposed to biological sex?”
The guidelines state specifically that a transgender student “should not be required to use a locker room or restroom that conflicts with the student’s gender identity.” As Higgins points out, the guidelines give no regard to heterosexual students and their standards.
“Why are other students compelled to share restrooms and locker rooms with those whose biological sex they don’t share?” she asks.
Higgins says “this [policy] poses the greatest threat to parental rights, children’s rights, this whole sexual anarchy movement, speech rights and religious liberty.”
The NYC transgender student guidelines identify several groups that offer support and resources to transgender students and families, among them The Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the pro-LBGTQ Trevor Project, and the local chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Friends and Family of Lesbians and Gays).
